The characteristics and advantages of diatom mud and its maintenance method

What is Diatom Mud?

Diatom mud, also known as diatomaceous earth, is a substance formed by the deposition of the cell wall of diatoms over many years. Diatoms are a type of algae that live in oceans, lakes. The natural diatom mud is mostly light yellow or light gray in color, and has the characteristics of low density, pores, roughness and strong water absorption. Most of the diatom mud products on the market are first deposited and ground into powder, and then processed. The most common examples are diatom mud paint and diatom mud mats.

Experts suggest that the best places to decorate with diatom mud are toilets, kitchens, bedrooms or living rooms.

Diatom mud mats

In addition to using diatom mud to decorate the walls of the bedroom or living room, we can also choose some floor mats made of diatom mud to use as bathroom mats.

The weather is humid, especially during the summer months. If the air in the house is not well circulated, or the exhaust fan in the bathroom is not strong enough, the general cloth mat is easy to grow bacteria, and it will soon produce odors. At this time, a floor mat made of diatom mud can help us solve the problem.

The diatom mud mat is like a hard sponge, which instantly absorbs moisture from wet feet. In addition, the fine pores in the material can absorb odors, so it will have the function of anti-odor and odor absorption when placed in the bathroom.

Advantages of diatom mud mat: strong water absorption, easy to dry, anti-odor, odor absorption

Diatom mud maintenance

Whether it is diatom mud paint or diatom mud mat, the cleaning and maintenance methods are similar.

1) Avoid rinsing with water:

If there is dirt on the surface of the diatom mud, experts do not recommend that you wash it directly with water. Because of the strong water absorption of diatom mud, moisture may still be locked at the bottom, if it is in a wet state for a long time, diatom mud will still have a chance to mold!

2) Wipe small stains with clean water or use sandpaper:

If there is a small area of stain on the diatom mud, we can generally use a rag dipped in an appropriate amount of water to gently wipe it off. However, if the stain still cannot be removed, then we can use sandpaper to gently grind off the surface of the diatom mud.

3) Avoid sun exposure:

Diatom mud mats absorb moisture for a long time, so we sometimes stand them up and wait for them to dry naturally. Diatom mud is not resistant to sunlight, if the diatom mud mat is dried in the sun, the mat may crack off as a whole, so you should pay more attention to this!
